Gehrman

The weary First Hunter who offers a final choice between death and an endless nightmare.

Gehrman is the First Hunter, an elderly figure who oversees the Hunter's Dream, a mysterious realm where players return between their journeys through Yharnam. He serves as the primary guide for the unnamed Hunter, offering a safe hub to purchase items, level up, and upgrade weapons. While he appears weary and bound to his post, Gehrman acts as the gatekeeper who can release hunters from their slumber or force them to continue the Hunt. His presence anchors the game's narrative, providing context for the player's arrival in Yharnam and the nature of the blood-borne plague that drives the conflict.

Lore & Background

Before the events of the game, Gehrman was part of the early efforts to combat the beastly transformation in Yharnam. He is deeply connected to the Healing Church's history and the School of Mensis, as he once taught Lady Maria, a former pupil who later guarded the clock tower in the Hunter's Nightmare. His role within the Dream is dictated by a pact with the Moon Presence, an entity that binds him to serve as the dream's master. He remains trapped in this cycle, guiding hunters through their nightmares while secretly hoping they might find a way out. The source notes his connection to Lady Maria and his position as an elderly Hunter who has watched countless others enter and leave the Dream.

In Their Own Story

The Hunter arrives in Yharnam seeking Paleblood and awakens during the night of the Hunt, only to be transported to the Hunter's Dream by Gehrman. There, the old man guides them toward the Healing Church's grand cathedral, where a vision points the way to Byrgenwerth. As the Hunter progresses through areas like Yahar'gul and the Nightmare of Mensis, defeating bosses such as Rom and Mergo's Wet Nurse, they eventually return to the Dream. At this critical juncture, Gehrman offers to release them from their slumber. If accepted, he kills the Hunter, allowing them to awaken in Yharnam at sunrise. If refused, the two engage in combat; should the player defeat him, the Moon Presence binds the Hunter as Gehrman's replacement. However, if the Hunter consumed three umbilical cords before refusing, they resist the Moon Presence, kill it, and are reborn as an infant Great One.

Reader's Guide

Gehrman functions as the central hub figure, allowing players to buy items, level up, upgrade weapons, and travel between areas using lamps. He is not a combatant until the game's conclusion. In the ending sequence, his role shifts from mentor to final obstacle if the player refuses his offer of release. His defeat is contingent on whether the player has gathered three umbilical cords; with them, the outcome changes from being replaced to becoming a Great One. Without them, the cycle continues with the new hunter taking Gehrman's place.
